Memory card data recovery

The new digital cameras came equipped with memory cards. Almost all digital cameras use memory cards for storage of photographs or films you may take at different occasions. A lot of memory cards of different capacity and format, i.e. SD, MMC, xD, Compact Flash, Memory Duo, Smart Media, etc are now available. Most of these cards may suffer data loss for various reasons: erroneous operation of the camera, human error, accidental formatting, hardware incompatibilities etc. Similar to USB sticks, memory cards data loss are divided into two distinct categories defined by class of defects (incidents) that caused them:

LOGICAL DEFECTS

these are characterized by the physical functioning of the memory card to parameters specified by manufacturer, as well as some deficiencies of file system (deleted files, accidentally formatted cards, overwritten files, camera or card reader do not recognize the file system etc.)

PHYSICAL DEFECTS

These are mainly characterized by cameras or card readers not being able to recognize the memory card or by the card not functioning at the manufacturer’s hardware parameters.

Logical defects are relatively easy to deal with as long as information is not overwritten (eg. you delete a photograph and then you take others). Physical defects suppose more complex recovery techniques. Similar to USB sticks the information is read individually, from each memory chip in raw form, using a flash reader, then assembled according to internal organization algorithm of each card controller. Unfortunately not all memory cards can be disassembled (embedded or monolithic cards) so that the memory chip might be read by the card reader.
